Tigerella (also called Mr Stripey) is a medium-sized heritage variety with distinctive orange-red skin marked by gold stripes, making it one of the most ornamental tomatoes in the kitchen garden. The flavour is pleasantly tangy and more acidic than sweeter modern varieties — a refreshing sharpness that makes it excellent in salads and fresh preparations.
Flavour
Bright, tangy, and acidic with a good tomato flavour that has more sharpness than sweetness. The distinctive visual appeal makes it a natural choice for mixed heritage salads. The skin is slightly thicker than cherry types and provides a satisfying snap when bitten.
In the kitchen
Best eaten fresh in salads where the striped skin provides visual drama alongside other heritage varieties. Good in a bruschetta or fresh salsa. The tangy acidity makes it particularly good in combinations with sweet or fatty ingredients — burrata, mozzarella, avocado.
Growing
Cordon variety, well-suited to outdoor growing as well as under glass. Good disease resistance. Moderate vigour. The distinctive striping is most pronounced on outdoor-grown plants in full sun — fruit grown under glass can be less intensely marked.
