Sungold is consistently rated the sweetest tomato variety in existence — an F1 hybrid cherry tomato with an almost tropical flavour profile quite unlike anything available in shops. The golden-orange fruit hangs in long trusses and the plants are vigorous and productive through a long season. One taste converts most gardeners for life.
Flavour
Exceptionally sweet with a complex tropical-fruity note — hints of peach and apricot alongside the classic tomato sweetness. Very low acidity compared to red cherry types. The skin is thin, almost translucent when ripe, and the flesh is intensely flavoured. Best eaten directly from the plant while still warm from the sun.
In the kitchen
Almost too good to cook — Sungold is primarily a fresh eating variety, eaten straight from the vine or in salads where they add extraordinary colour and sweetness. They do roast well and make an unusual golden tomato sauce with a sweeter, less acidic character than conventional tomatoes.
Growing
F1 hybrid cordon variety. Grow exactly as Gardener's Delight but note the F1 status means saved seed won't breed true. Vigorous plants benefit from early training and support. Very susceptible to splitting after heavy rain following dry spells — maintain consistent watering. One of the highest-yielding cherry varieties for the size of the fruit. Best under glass in cooler regions.
