Enorma is a runner bean variety that does exactly what its name suggests — producing exceptionally long, flat, smooth pods that can reach 45–50cm in ideal conditions, though 35–40cm is typical. Despite the impressive size, the flavour is excellent and the pods remain tender when harvested at the right moment. A favourite for gardeners who enjoy the theatre of maximum-size vegetables.
Flavour
Full runner bean flavour — slightly sweet, slightly earthy, with the characteristic grassy quality of fresh runner beans. The large size means the beans inside are more developed than smaller varieties, giving more substance to each pod. Best harvested at 30–35cm for the best texture and flavour. Stringless when harvested at the right time.
In the kitchen
Slice on the diagonal to show off the length and cook in boiling salted water for 4–5 minutes — the large size means a little longer than smaller varieties. Excellent grilled in a cast iron pan over the fire with olive oil and garlic until blistered and charred. The long slices look spectacular on a platter and are a great conversation piece at a BBQ.
Growing
Standard runner bean cultural requirements — 2.4m canes, well-watered. Enorma is a particularly vigorous grower and may reach the top of standard 2.4m canes — tip the plants if they exceed the support height. Very productive. The key to maintaining quality is harvesting at the right stage — once pods start to feel bumpy with developed seeds, they become stringy.
