Variety
Purple Wight
The UK's earliest-maturing garlic — vivid purple stripes and fresh, assertive flavour

Purple Wight is an Isle of Wight hardneck variety that matures earlier than most UK-grown garlics — ready to harvest in June or even late May — making it the first fresh garlic of the season. The bulbs have striking purple stripes on the outer skin and a clean, assertive flavour that is at its best eaten fresh rather than stored, when the moisture content gives it a juicy intensity.
Flavour
Bold, fresh, and assertive with a clean heat that's more direct than aged or cured garlic. Best appreciated when eaten soon after harvest — fresh garlic has a juiciness and immediacy that cured garlic doesn't have. The flavour softens and mellows within weeks of curing. A great variety for anyone who wants to understand what truly fresh garlic tastes like.
In the kitchen
Exceptional for fresh preparations — thinly sliced raw into salads and dressings where the vivid purple stripes add visual drama. Excellent in a fresh garlic butter made immediately after harvest. The early maturity means it's available for the early summer BBQ season when fresh garlic is at its most vibrant.
Growing
Hardneck variety, plant October–November. Matures 3–4 weeks earlier than most UK varieties — watch closely in late May and harvest as soon as the lower leaves brown. Stores for 4–6 months after curing. The purple colouring is most vivid on the outer skin; inner cloves are white. Available as UK certified seed from Isle of Wight growers.
